Legacy Microsoft Tenants (M365 Eduation and MSOPB)

Microsoft Tenants are license subscriptions that are purchased by an organization (in this case, the University of Paderborn). In the past, members of the University of Paderborn were able to obtain membership in various Microsoft tenants and use the respective apps, licenses and associated services.

These include, for example:

  • MS Office (Online & locally installed)
    • Various MS Office Plugins (Citavi)
  • MS Teams
  • Exchange (Mail service)
  • OneDrive
  • and many more

As part of the ongoing consolidation (license agreements, pricing, terms of use, etc.) on the part of Microsoft and the University of Paderborn, former tenants will be closed or no longer supported in the coming period.

This affects MSOPB and Office 365 Education.

Tenant Username Authorized to use

The long-term remaining tenant will be Microsoft 365, which can be requested via the service portal and uses <USERNAME>@ad.uni-paderborn.de as the login name. More about this can be found here: Microsoft 365 - Beantragen & Nutzen

When will the shutdown take place?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

At the moment we are planning exactly these steps. Therefore, there are no fixed dates yet, however, according to current planning, the MSOPB tenant will be shut down first. The MS 365 Office Education tenant will follow afterwards.

What happens to the data/projects/emails that exist in the tenants that are shut down?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

If it is possible, we will support you transfering your data by tutorials. In case of large projects or groups, counseling sessions are possible. Please note that an automatic move will not be possible from a purely technical point of view. However, most applications/data can be transferred quite easily.
If you are concerned that this is not possible for specific data sets, please let us know the application/circumstances via email!

Will all applications/licenses continue to be available in the Microsoft 365 tenant?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

As far as we can arrange license rights, as well as necessary usage and privacy agreements, we try to offer you as much as possible from the MS catalog. However, we cannot guarantee this for every application, license or service. However, we are trying to extend the offer also later. You can find an overview of the available apps under Microsoft 365 - Apps.

When should I switch?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

From our point of view, as early as possible. This will make it easier for us to make the switch, and you will be future-proofed yourself. Be aware, however, that you need to be in the same tenant for shared use of some applications. MS Teams in particular stands out from the crowd of applications.

Can I use the new tenant together with the old ones?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Yes, this is possible. However, for active applications (e.g. MS Teams) it is relevant to which tenant you are logged in. You can always tell by the login name (see above).
