Support for Windows 10 has ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft does no longer offer free security updates or technical support for Windows 10. This means that PCs running Windows 10 will still continue to function, but they will become more vulnerable to security risks as no new patches or updates will be released.
What should you do?[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
If Windows 10 is currently installed on your PC, you should take action now. There are different solutions depending on your device.
If you want to continue working with Windows, we recommend switching to Windows 11. If your PC meets the requirements, you can upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. For more information, visit:
The easiest way to check whether your PC supports Windows 11 is to use Microsoft's “”'PC Health Check'“”. You can download the programme here. If your PC is compatible, this programme can also help you upgrade to Windows 11.
The different paths to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 are described by Microsoft here.
Employees[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
If your PC does not meet the requirements for Windows 11, you will need to purchase a new device. Please ensure that you only purchase devices that include a licence for the operating system.
Exceptions[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
- In justified exceptions, paid ESU licences can be purchased for individual devices (Windows 10 Extended Security Updates). However, this is not a long-term solution and is initially only intended for one year.
- If you are using Windows 10 LTSC: Separate deadlines apply here for the end of support beyond 14 October 2025. Check the end of support for your version. See Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and Windows 10 LTSC 2021.
- PCs that continue to operate with Windows 10 without security updates after 14 October 2025 may be excluded from the wired university network and the VPN.
Students[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
If you would like to continue using your personal device with Windows 10 beyond 14 October 2025, we recommend Microsoft's Windows 10 ESU programme. For personal devices that are not used commercially, this is available free of charge for one year. A Microsoft account is required. Details can be found here. However, this is only a temporary solution.
⚠
Do not use the University of Paderborn's Microsoft 365 account as your Windows login account!
Windows 10 ESU is only free if a private Microsoft account was used as the login account for Windows 10 on the device. If the Microsoft 365 Account provided by Paderborn University is used as the login account for Windows 10, Windows 10 ESU is not free of charge. You can still activate your Microsoft 365 apps (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, etc.) the Microsoft 365 Account provided by Paderborn University.
Alternative operating system[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]
Your device does not meet the requirements for Windows 11, but purchasing a new one is not an option for you? Depending on the device, it may be possible to continue using it with an alternative operating system such as Linux. Some of the services we offer can also be used under Linux. ZIM does not offer support for the installation and setup of Linux.
